The wonderful location of Rethymno is located the north coastline of Crete and it is a pleasant old town layered with tiny streets and white washed houses. A significant fortress stands above the town that was used to safeguard the location from pirates. It's a favorite destination for vacationers.

Rethymno is also a good place to use as when looking to discover Western Crete. The area has numerous trekking and scuba diving services for anyone looking for an energetic getaway.

The old quarter is a labyrinth of narrow streets draped in floral canopies, stylish woodbalconied houses and elaborate Venetian monuments, with minarets incorporating a touch of the Orient. While architectural resemblances invite comparison with Chania, Rethymno features a personality all its own.

Rethymno includes a variety of fun little shops, including a good carved olive wood shop and diverse shops providing door amulets and ship models made from sterling silver. The Rethymno Museum has a beautiful gift shop featuring reproductions, including some little statues.

Rethymno is loaded with wonderful beaches, intriguing archaeological sites and Byzantine churches, lovely towns, vibrant resorts and its capital, the town of Rethymno, is an extremely desirable city which has maintained many samples of the magnificent Venetian architecture.

Probably the most tempting parts of the city is the old area situated on the waterfront. The castle dominates the region, the site of what once was an acropolis. Within the great walls were once a myriad of structures, but today, only a church and a mosque survive, and there are many ruins to explore.

The nearby town of Rethymno has a good choice of stores, cafes and dining places and the nightlife is very vibrant here too. The harbor has some wonderful eateries which serve fish that has been caught locally.

Out from the city, the mountains possess a intriguing array of towns and chapels to visit and experience. The shoreline around Rethymno is where you can the hotels of the area, and locating a quiet beach can be tough in the summertime months.

Rethymno itself started a period of expansion when the Venetian conquerors of the island chose to put an intermediate business station between Heraklion and Chania, acquiring its own bishop and nobility along the way. The current old town ( palia poli ) is practically completely built by the Venetians . It is probably the best protected old towns in Crete.
